Making the Beta 43 Fit

prop shaft

Prop Shaft Extension The Beta 43 has a completely different footprint than the Perkins. The engine sits a bit higher and the transmission is considerably shorter. As such, our prop shaft wouldn’t mate up with the transmission. So we went to Bay Propeller in Alameda and had them create a shaft extension for us. We […]

Installing a “New” Self-Tailing Winch

Barient Winch

Actually it’s a used winch we bought at a local consignment shop.  It was broken and Rich was able to fix it for super cheap.  We bought the winch to replace an old Barlow 20 we have for our mainsheet.  While the Barlow works just fine, it isn’t a self-tailing winch and it only has […]

New Chainplates – Not as Hard as We Expected

We finally finished installing the new chainplates!  We’ve been dreading this project since Day 1.  What we thought was going to be a huge, fiberglassy mess inside the boat turned out to be a small fiberglassy mess inside the boat.  With two of us working together, one on the Fein Multimaster and one on the […]

Fall Projects

Fall Projects

I know, I know…we haven’t posted in a loooong time.  When I sat down to write this post I wasn’t sure what I was going to write about because I didn’t think we had worked on many projects around the boat.  I recently bought an Aeropress coffee maker and was going to write about that. […]

Hood winked

Old Sea Hood

Back in early June I removed the dilapidated old sea hood in order to fix and finish the companionway hatch.  Since I’m having so much fun working with fiberglass and resins lately, I figured now would be a great time to build a new hatch turtle.  Ugh….

Core Values

Last summer we peeled up all the teak decking and filled about a thousand screw holes in the fiberglass skin with epoxy.  We knew we had some serious moisture issues in the core material and would eventually need to address the problem. “Eventually” finally came last week.

Still plugging away at projects

Our boat has a lot of teak.  It’s old, and worn out.  Jeni’s stripped off all the brown Cetol now, and I know why the previous owners slathered every inch of woodwork in the stuff.  To hide all the problems…..
