Why, Tom Brokaw? Why

I’ve never really liked Tom Brokaw, or any newscaster for that matter, but now I really don’t like Tom Brokaw and here’s why. Every morning on my long commute to work (60 miles, people) I have to hear his lame 30 second segment called “This is an American Story” twice! It’s nothing but ramblings of an out-of-touch, old man. Yesterday he talked about his swim teacher when he was a kid and how he always thinks of her when he swims. Really? Who needs to know this and why does he think it’s relevant to anything, anyone, anywhere? Why, Tom Brokaw? Why?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against rambling (obviously) or out-of-touch old men. I am against touching old men, but that’s another story. I loved listening to Paul Harvey’s “The Rest of the Story.” Even one of our local radio news guys has a good one called “Crane’s Corner.” The difference is “The Rest of the Story” and “Crane’s Corner” have a point and make you think about some relevant topic or curiosity. And they craft their stories in such a way that you’re drawn in. You turn up the volume so as not to miss a single word. “This is an American Story” just makes me angry. So. Angry.

I know it’s only 30 seconds long, but…it’s 30 seconds long! And I hear it to and from work. So that’s 2 minutes of my commuting life that I have to put up with his nonsense. And it is the definition of nonsense. It makes no sense! None!

So my response to his nonsensical ramblings is to write about some of my own lame experiences. I mean, we already kind of do that, but we edit what we write about and try to keep it to lame boat-related stories. Now I’ve decided to branch out. Rich will still write about boaty stuff and I will too, but I have some pretty lame experiences I’m willing to share. Don’t be jealous. I’m sure you have lame experiences too.
