Embarking on a sewing project, even without prior experience, has been a rewarding endeavor. Somehow we managed to sew a canvas helm cover for our sailboat, despite being novices in the art of sewing. Equipped with a Sailrite Ultrafeed LSZ sewing machine and a determination to use this very expensive sewing machine, we embraced the challenge. We were able to create a pattern, using scrim as a layout tool. And work with Sunbrella canvas in an unconventional color for sailboats.

The Quest for a Helm Cover

Our initial intention was to hire a professional to sew a canvas helm cover for us. However, an unfortunate turn of events left us without a properly fitting cover and without our original helm cover as a pattern. Determined to replace the lost canvas, we took matters into our own hands and decided to sew the cover ourselves.

Creating the Pattern

With no pattern at our disposal, we turned to Sailrite’s DIY YouTube channel for guidance. This invaluable resource provided step-by-step instructions on how to create a pattern for our helm cover. Using scrim—a lightweight plastic often used for layout purposes—we meticulously measured and marked the dimensions of the helm to develop an accurate pattern. This allowed us to move forward with confidence in creating a cover that would fit perfectly.

Sewing with Sunbrella Canvas

For our helm cover, we chose Sunbrella canvas. It’s a durable and weather-resistant material widely recognized for its excellent UV protection and longevity. Sunbrella offers an extensive range of colors, and we opted for a shade called Rust. This color not only complements the aesthetic of our sailboat but also helps prevent sun damage and weathering of the teak helm.

Sewing with the Sailrite Machine

Equipped with a Sailrite Ultrafeed LSZ sewing machine, specifically designed for heavy-duty sewing applications, we ventured into the world of sewing. Learning to operate the machine and handle the fabric required some practice. The Ultrafeed proved to be a reliable companion throughout the process. Its robust construction and specialized features made sewing the canvas manageable, even for beginners like us.

The Rewards of Sewing a DIY Helm Cover

By taking on the task of sewing our canvas helm cover, we gained several benefits, including:
