We’ve heard that switching from a manual to an electric windlass can significantly enhance the sailing experience. Most cruisers spend 90% of their time at anchor so making anchor handling more convenient was a must for us. In the videos below, we share our journey of installing a Lofrans Tigres on our sailboat. We explore the steps involved in running the electrical wire from the battery box to the bow, discuss the modifications required for the new windlass, and highlight the benefits of this upgrade.

The Need for an Electric Windlass

As sailors, we recognized the benefits of transitioning to an electric windlass for smoother anchoring operations. While our manual Simpson Lawrence 555 has served us well in the past, the allure of easy anchor retrieval and reduced physical strain prompted us to shop for an electric windlass. Carolyn Shearlock has said that an electric windlass is an essential piece of safety equipment on a cruising sailboat.

Cruisers without an electric windlass tend to anchor in shallower water and often use less scope so that it will be easier to retrieve their anchor. This combination means that they:

  • are more likely to drag anchor (being on short scope);
  • have less time to react before being aground (since they anchored closer to shore); and
  • will have a harder time and take longer to re-anchor, especially in deteriorating conditions.

Running the Cable

One of the primary considerations during the installation process is the need to run large cables from the battery box located at the stern of the boat up to the bow, where the windlass is be mounted. This involves careful planning and routing to ensure the cable is adequately protected and hidden from view.

Modifying the Windlass Bracket

Since we already had a custom windlass bracket fabricated for the Simpson Lawrence 555, we were able to repurpose it for the new Lofrans Tigres with some modifications. This saved us time and effort in the installation process, as we only needed to make minor adjustments to accommodate the different dimensions and mounting requirements of the new windlass.

Benefits of the Lofrans Tigres Windlass

The Lofrans Tigres offers several advantages over manual alternatives, including:

  1. Convenience and Efficiency: With the touch of a button, the Lofrans Tigres effortlessly handles anchor deployment and retrieval. This eliminates the need for manual cranking and reduces physical exertion, making anchoring operations quicker and more efficient.
  2. Increased Safety: The electric windlass reduces the risk of accidents and injuries associated with manual handling of heavy anchor chains. The control provided by the electric motor allows for safe and controlled anchor management.
  3. Reliability: The Lofrans Tigresis designed to withstand the demanding conditions of marine environments, ensuring durability and long-lasting performance. This reliability gives us peace of mind, knowing that our windlass can handle the rigors of anchoring in various weather conditions.

Upgrading to the Lofrans Tigres has been a significant improvement in our sailing experience. The convenience, efficiency, and safety it offers have revolutionized our anchoring operations. If you’re considering a switch from a manual windlass to an electric one, the Lofrans Tigres provides a reliable and robust solution. Enjoy the convenience and ease of anchor handling as you embark on your future sailing adventures.
