Prop Shaft Extension
The Beta 43 has a completely different footprint than the Perkins. The engine sits a bit higher and the transmission is considerably shorter. As such, our prop shaft wouldn’t mate up with the transmission. So we went to Bay Propeller in Alameda and had them create a shaft extension for us. We also got a flexible coupling which should help if there is any vibration. We’re hoping it’s a temporary solution and we can get a new prop shaft when we haul the boat out.
Beta 43 Wet Exhaust System
Diesel engines like our are water-cooled inboard engines. Cooling water is injected into the exhaust pipe, which cools the exhaust and muffles engine noise. The exhaust then pushes the water out the exhaust pipe. This is known as a wet exhaust system.
During the wet exhaust system installation, we encountered a size mismatch between our existing thru-hull and the exhaust hose. To ensure a proper fit and optimal flow, it was necessary to modify the thru-hull accordingly. We decided to make the necessary adjustments to accommodate the larger hose to facilitate the efficient discharge of exhaust gases.
A New Beginning
Finally, in September 2022, the moment of truth arrived. We fired up the Beta Marine 43, filled with anticipation and a touch of nostalgia for the Perkins era. As the new engine roared to life, we bid farewell to our past engine troubles, embracing the possibilities that lay ahead.
Our journey with the Perkins 4-108 was filled with both triumphs and tribulations. From its early days of dependable service to the unfortunate grounding incident that triggered persistent overheating issues, our experience underscored the importance of thorough troubleshooting and problem-solving. Although unforeseen circumstances forced us to say goodbye to our cherished Perkins, the introduction of the Beta Marine 43 marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter in our boating adventures. As sailors, we learn to adapt, overcome obstacles, and embrace change, all while cherishing the memories and lessons learned along the way.
