Sewing Projects for Our Sailboat

As a cruiser on a sailboat, there’s more to know than just mastering the art of sailing. As a cruiser, you often find yourself in need of practical and customized solutions for various onboard needs. One skill that comes in handy is sewing. Whether you’re looking to protect or repair your sails, enhance comfort, or keep things organized, sewing projects on a sailboat can be both rewarding and functional. Below are some of the sewing sewing projects that we’ve done to elevate our cruising experience.

Designing a Foredeck Staysail Bag

A foredeck sail bag is an essential accessory for any sailor with a hank-on staysail. It allows you to stow and protect your staysail when not in use. Using durable Sunbrella canvas and a reliable sewing machine like the Sailrite Ultrafeed LSZ, you can create a custom-fit sail bag. Measure your staysail carefully and design a bag that ensures a snug fit, offering optimal protection from the elements while also allowing easy access when needed.

Sewing a Canvas Tarp

When rain showers grace your cruising journey, having a canvas tarp can be a lifesaver. We used Sunbrella canvas which is known for its excellent weather resistance. We use this custom-made tarp to shield our sailboat’s deck, hatches, and cockpit from rain to help keep our living space dry.

Cutting Closed Cell Foam

Comfort is key while cruising, and one area where it truly matters is the settee. Cutting closed cell foam to fit our settee has provided a comfortable seating area and helps maintain good posture. Measure the dimensions of your settee and carefully cut the foam to size. We covered the foam with batting for extra comfort.

Sewing Cushion Covers

To give your sailboat’s interior a fresh and vibrant look, consider sewing upholstery cushion covers. Select marine-grade fabric that can withstand the rigors of the marine environment. Measure your cushions and cut the fabric accordingly, leaving room for seams. We created zippered covers for easy removal and cleaning. We chose a neutral pallet and added accent pillows to infuse our sailboat’s interior with our personal style.

Pockets, Pouches, and Bags for Storage

Keeping your sailboat organized is essential for efficiency and ease of navigation. Sewing pockets, pouches, and bags provides convenient storage solutions for items like jibsheets and sailboat lines. Utilize sturdy marine-grade fabric and design various sizes and shapes to accommodate different items. Attach them to bulkheads, lifelines, or railings to keep everything neatly in place and protected from the weather.

Cockpit Cushions

The cockpit is where you spend a significant amount of time while cruising. Enhance comfort during those long hours by sewing open cell foam cockpit cushions. Measure the seating area of your cockpit, cut the foam accordingly, and create cushion covers using a UV-resistant fabric. Ensure the covers are removable for cleaning and consider incorporating non-slip features to keep them in place.
