This past weekend was the 4th of July. As usual, we didn’t do too much. Friday morning we took Fat Suki to Korth’s Pirate Lair for breakfast. Surprisingly it only took us about 20 minutes to get there and we got up to 17 kph. Way faster than we thought our little dink could go.
The rest of Friday was a goof off day. Since the winds were light, we decided to finally try to get the jib unfurled. The head pendant was wrapped around the foil and it kept jamming. We wiggled it around and it came loose in short order. When we took the jib down we noticed a small tear in luff tape at the head – a bummer but not too shabby for a 37 year-old sail. We also noticed the head pendant is about 5 feet long which seems much too long. The Schaefer manual says the head pendant should be no longer than 6 inches. Not sure why ours is so long, but we’ll work on that another day. We furled the sail back up and decided to try hoisting the main. The mainsail went up without a hitch, other than the slugs jamming in the track. Not a big deal since we already know we’re going to change the sail track. One thing is for sure; our sails are in rough shape. The main is creased and stained. On the bright side only one wasp mud nest fell out.
Later we went to grocery shopping and got some things to barbecue for dinner. The winds kicked up and it was nice and cool in the evening. Just after dusk we could hear the fireworks show starting. Baron Hilton puts on a big show at Mandeville Island every year. We went out to the levee and could see fireworks way in the distance which seemed weird because Mandeville is only about 4 miles away. Come to find out we could see fireworks in every direction. There were fireworks in the Rio Vista area, Antioch area, Walnut Grove area and Mandeville. The fireworks at Mandeville were the closest and we didn’t even have to leave the boat.
Saturday night was movie night. Devery played Overboard with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russel. I’ve seen that movie dozens of times, and it was still a lot of fun. The rest of the weekend was filled with boat work. I finally finished scraping the Cetol off the teak on the sides of the boat. All that’s left is a small area at the bow, a little at the stern, the boom gallows and two of the dorade vents. Since it was so hot in the afternoons I stayed indoors to sorts through my photos and I found more amazing sunset and sunrise photos.
Oh, and my Mom and Dad’s stray cat had kittens. So cute!
sounds like a perfect weekend. Oh by the way, I have 3 kittens to give away to good homes ONLY. the one Jeni is hold is Joey and he stays. He is almost as cute as Jeni.
